The annual MET Gala fundraiser – and celebrity-studded fashion event of the year – is themed to the show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. And in 2019, the Costume Institute is putting on “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” looking at camp the aesthetic sensibility, a theme that could only mean one thing: everyone will be asked to explain what they think “camp” means on the red carpet. And hilarity would ensue as a result. It’s fair to say that we were not disappointed!
Dozens of fashion blogs, magazines and folks with an Ethernet connection have weighed in on what exactly ‘camp’ means – our favourite is this attempt by Vox:
https://bit.ly/2ZVQCS4 . ‘Tongue-in-cheek’ . . . ‘gender-bending’ . . . ‘colourful’ . . . ‘playful’ . . . ‘abstract’ – camp can be all of these things and none of these things it seems, depending on who’s doing the defining!
We watched Katy Perry turn herself into both a chandelier and a fashion hamburger; Kim K defied biological reality with a tightly strapped body con number literally dripping in diamonds (and looking like she just walked out of a pool. Again. I guess the wet look is still in for 2019?); and Lady Gaga donned so much pink fabric that you wonder if she took ‘camp’ too literally and wore a tent instead of a dress. (According to Billboard, she won the MET Gala – check out why: https://bit.ly/2WxYwPx ). Why not follow suit, be brave, and strap on something out of the ordinary?
